The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020

The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020, is a welcome measure on multiple counts to the farmers. The plight of the farmers is only too well known under the current conditions. While on one side the farmers are unable to sell products at their production cost or higher, on the other side the farm inputs are market dictated. This eases out some of the controls especially on stocking of farm products, agricultural products and agricultural processed products. This is a small step forward in the right direction, no doubt. Maybe, this should have been placed in the parliament and should have been brought into force after due deliberation, however, the Act carries the essential features as for as the essential commodities go. Given the Covid situation, we will give the benefit to the GoI. However, this carries the required teeth and is in effect from 5 Jun 2020. More farm reforms are required in order to bring the poor farmer out of the sorrowful state he is in. For the farmers of India, easing the law would go a long way to bring back the faith in Hard Work.
